Lagoon City and Lake Simcoe
Lake
Simcoe
Lake Simcoe is part of the Trent-Severn navigation system
that allows pleasure boats to travel from Lake Ontario to
Georgian Bay via a series of rivers, lakes and canals.
From it's start at the Murray Canal near Trenton to it's end
at Port Severn, the system is 240 miles long and includes 44
locks and the Big Chute marine railroad.
With its clear water and comfortable summer temperatures,
Lake Simcoe is a centre for recreational boating and
swimming. Lagoon City, the home of the Yacht Club, is
on the east side of the lake, halfway between Beaverton and
Orillia.
Lake Simcoe, which has a surface area of 743 square
kilometers, is situated in Southern Ontario between Georgian
Bay and Lake Ontario, 65 km north of Toronto. To the
north, Atherley narrows separates it from Lake Couchiching
at Orillia, and both lakes drain northwesterly via the
Severn river to Georgian Bay. To the south, it touches a
fertile marshland (Holland Marsh) that has developed into an
extensive market-gardening area. The City of Barrie
lies at the head of the Lake's deep western arm, Kempenfelt
Bay.
Long frequented by Indians who hunted Lake Simcoe's shores
and fished its waters, the lake was visited in 1615 by
Samuel de Champlain, who was recruiting Huron allies for a
campaign against the Iroquois. During the French
regime, it was part of a fur-trade portage route linking
Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario. Originally known by the
French as Lac Aux Claies, it was named by
Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe after his father.
